REFEREES NEEDED FOR OUR MITE HOME GAMES

All youth (boys & girls) PeeWee/U12 and above are eligible to complete the requirements for USA Hockey Officiating at Level 1, and officiate at our SLPYHA mite games.  The requirements are listed below. Officials earn $30/game, paid in one lump sum at the end of the season. This is a great way to learn more about the game, connect with younger players, gain some valuable experience, and earn some extra money.  Must live in the SLP boundaries, or play for SLP.

Requirements for Youth Officials (Level 1) are:

  • 1) REGISTRATION:  Complete the online USA Hockey Referee Registration:  Registration Link
    • Similar process as signing your child up as a player/skater, however this is a separate registration signing them up as an official. After registering, wait a half hour & you will eventually receive an email with instructions for creating your child's own USA Hockey login & profile, where all of their training requirements can be found.
    • Registration Fee: ($55 + $10 MN Affiliate Fee)
      • Reimbursable at end of season if you ref at least 2 games

  • 2) EDUCATION:  Complete the USA Hockey online education curriculum. Typically two computer based training courses that are automatically assigned to them within their USA Hockey profile.
    • Course 1 - Officiating Module (Level 1)
    • Course 2 - Playing Rules Exercise (Level 1)
      • *Open Book Exam, must answer 40 correct*
      • **Perform exam only after their rule book arrives in the mail**

  • 3) SEMINAR:  Attend a Level 1 Officiating Seminar. Dates and times for this can be found within their USA Hockey profile.  Typically a single 3-4hr online Zoom session.

  • 4) SAFESPORT:  Complete SafeSport training every two years (only if 17 years old or older).

Once the Mite Games have been scheduled (likely mid-late November), a communication will be sent out to all applicants regarding referee sign-ups for individual games.

Youth Officials are required to have the following (also refer to the equipment list attached to the top of this page):

- black pants (any black pants are ok, but no patterns or logos)

- black helmet w/ half shield

- whistle

- neck guard

- referee jersey

- *optional: protective cup, shin guards, elbow pads

Obtaining the required equipment is the referees responsibility. There are a few ref jerseys available in the equipment room that can be loaned out on a first come first serve basis.

Any questions, please reach out to either ref coordinator.
